This guide explains what MDFR actually evaluates for fire protection permits, the most common reasons plans are rejected, and how the approval process works from first submission through inspection.

What MDFR Reviews in Fire Protection Submittals

MDFR plan reviewers check hydraulic calculations for the correct format — the design area must be identified, pipe sizing must be documented from the most demanding sprinkler back to the water supply, and the system demand must be plotted against a water supply curve from a current flow test. Calculations presented in the wrong format are treated the same as missing calculations.

Pipe Schedule Method vs. Hydraulic Method

The pipe schedule method selects pipe sizes from NFPA 13 tables and is only permitted for specific light and ordinary hazard occupancies. The hydraulic method calculates actual water demand and is required for most commercial applications. MDFR accepts both where NFPA 13 allows, but the hydraulic method requires the full calculation package.
